Walls in days, roof in a week — framing is construction's highlight reel. What the crew builds, what the inspector checks, and what to look for on your walks.

Framing is construction's highlight reel. After months of paper and a week of concrete, a building erupts: floor system, then walls — often standing within days — then roof structure. Every visit shows visible change. Enjoy this stage; it's the one that photographs well (use real job-site footage here — this is what our clients' backyards actually look like in week twelve).

What's being built. The lumber skeleton per the structural sheets: plates bolted to those anchor bolts from pour day, studs, headers over every opening (sized by lesson 9.3's calculations), joists or trusses, and sheathing. In California, special attention goes to the seismic system becoming real: shear panels nailed to their specified schedule (nail size and spacing are engineered — this is why sheets of plywood get inspected), hold-downs bolted through to the foundation, and metal connectors tying roof to walls to floor. That glass-vs-shear-wall negotiation from lesson 9.7? You can now stand inside its resolution.

Windows, doors, and roofing follow fast — the shell closes, the building "dries in," and weather stops mattering. This is a genuine milestone (many payment schedules mark it — lesson 11.10).

What the framing inspection checks (the second big city visit — full system in 12.11): member sizes and spacing against the plans, the shear nailing schedule, hardware placement, blocking (including that bathroom grab-bar blocking from lesson 8.10 — this is the moment it goes in or doesn't). The inspector reads the stamped plans; the frame must match them.

What you should look at on your walks (with the GC, per 12.1): stand in the rooms. This is your last cheap chance to feel the space — window heights from inside, the kitchen window's actual view, where the bedroom outlets landed. Moving an outlet or a window rough opening costs little at framing and drywall-surgery later. Also confirm the built-in storage from lesson 8.7 made it into the frame; storage is the spec most often "value-engineered" away silently.

The trap of this stage: its speed resets expectations. Walls in four days! Then rough systems take a month and clients despair. Recall the rhythm: framing is the sprint; what follows is the craft.
