Inside a Real ADU Project at Framing Stage

This lesson is built around real job-site video — a guided walkthrough of an actual GatherADU project at framing stage. The written version below is the tour's field notes, so you can connect what the camera shows to everything this course has taught.

Stop 1: The corner hold-down. That steel bracket bolted through the bottom plate into the concrete? Lesson 9.3 and pour day (12.3), shaking hands. Every one of these was located by the engineer and verified by two inspections. This is what "seismic design" looks like in person: unglamorous, bolted, everywhere.

Stop 2: The shear wall. One wall is fully sheathed in plywood while its neighbor is open studs — now you know why (lesson 9.7's negotiation, built). Look close at the nailing: even spacing, marked rows. The inspector counted this.

Stop 3: The wet wall. One wall is visibly thicker and crowded with pipe — the kitchen on one side, bathroom on the other, exactly the plumbing grouping Modules 4 and 8 kept preaching. Money saved, visible as geometry.

Stop 4: The rough openings. Window and door holes, each with its engineered header. Stand at the future kitchen window: that's the sightline lesson 8.5 designed — the neighbor's yard missed, the fig tree hit. Design decisions are now lumber.

Stop 5: The systems previews. A thick drain line dropping through the floor (gravity at ¼ inch per foot — lesson 7.4, live and in person), the electrical panel's future home, the mini-split lineset path to the roof. Next lesson's cast, taking their places.

Stop 6: The bathroom blocking. Flat plywood rectangles nailed between studs at precise heights — lesson 8.10's $200 universal-design investment, installed in its only possible moment.

The point of this lesson isn't any single stop. It's the experience of standing inside a building and reading it — recognizing that every board answers to a drawing, every drawing answers to a code, and every code answers to a reason you now know. Ten modules ago this was a pile of lumber. Now it's legible. That's what this course was for — and there's one module of building left to watch.
