Why Design and Engineering Need to Work Together
When designers and engineers work in sequence instead of together, homeowners pay in redraws and corrections. What coordination looks like.
Here's the failure mode this lesson exists to prevent. A designer draws a beautiful ADU — glass across the whole south wall, vaulted ceiling, minimal interior walls. The homeowner loves it. Then it goes to a structural engineer, who calmly notes that in California, buildings need shear walls, and this design has nowhere to put them. Three options, all bad: redesign (weeks, dollars, heartbreak), steel moment frames (thousands per opening), or an argument. The homeowner pays for all three.
The root cause is sequence. Design then engineering treats the engineer as an inspector of finished dreams. Design with engineering treats structure as a design material from day one — and structure, it turns out, is negotiable when consulted early and expensive when confronted late.
What coordination actually looks like:
- The engineer sees the concept (stage 1, lesson 9.2), flags the wall that must work seismically, and the designer plans glass around it — cost of change: zero
- Foundation strategy is chosen with the soils and slope known (lessons 9.5–9.6) before floor heights and steps are drawn
- Equipment from Module 7 — the heat pump, the water heater closet, the panel — gets located on the plans early, not squeezed in wherever's left
- Title 24's energy model runs on the near-final design, so the window package doesn't need last-minute shrinking
- Every sheet gets cross-checked before submission: the floor plan's window matches the elevation's window matches the structural sheet's header matches the Title 24 report's glazing schedule
That last item is bigger than it sounds. Plan checkers (Module 10 preview) hunt inter-sheet contradictions — a window that's 4 feet on one sheet and 5 on another is a guaranteed correction cycle. Uncoordinated sets from disconnected consultants are the #1 generator of correction rounds; coordinated sets sail.
What this means for hiring (Module 11 preview): the question isn't "do you know an engineer?" — it's "how do your designer and engineer work together, and who coordinates the set before submission?" Integrated teams (in-house or long-partnered) resolve the glass-vs-shear-wall conversation in a Tuesday meeting. Disconnected consultants resolve it in your correction letters, on your timeline, at your expense.
